BBOX Radio
Brooklyn

BBOX spreads love, the Brooklyn way. Founded on the principle that radio and community are meant to be intertwined, BBOX was inspired by the boomboxes and block parties of Brooklyn. When Dekalb Market and Urban Space NY hosted their “Not Just A Container” Competition in the spring of 2011, we proposed our vision for a radio station inspired by our borough, sitting at this intersection between diverse communities. We won, and within months, BBOX was launched from a Dekalb Market cargo container. BBOX’s aim is to represent the voice of Brooklyn, supporting the exchange of ideas and music by providing a local community platform & meeting place. Through an evolving collaboration with its neighbours — artists, educators, entrepreneurs, civic advocates and everyone in between — BBOX presents a range of engaging radio programs, concerts, workshops, exhibits and talks.

Unravelling the Urban Lexicon

London

Unravelling the Urban Lexicon offers insights into how people respond to urban details, and begins to decipher how details in our city environments affect our perceptions of a place. Through a synthesis of the street workshops, interviews, visual research and analysis we created a guide to unravelling the urban lexicon of signs and details that make us love or loath our urban spaces.

A Bright Sparks funded research project, undertaken by Rosanna Vitiello and Marcus Willcocks, in conjunction with Gunpowder Park.

As a designer at Ralph Appelbaum Associates, I led a team to develop interpretive strategies, urban interventions and communication tools which communicate the evolving stories of the largest urban park project in Europe for past 150 years. Interactive trails, printed field guides, explorer's packs and mobile apps reveal the park from the perspectives of art, biodiversity, community and sport.

Culture Captures

Brasil, Mallorca, Berlin

Bored with lacklustre travel guides, so as a way to document my travels, I began creating alternatives: culture captures. Having honed my travel writing skills with Arvon last summer, I've been creating travelogues ever since: observations, sketches and images tied together with a collection of tricks, tales and narratives gathered from people met on each journey. The aim is to share the places that have inspired in order to inspire others, through a growing series of personal and visual guides that capture the essence of a place and time. In the works are a travelogue on New Orleans and a personal book on Naples.

Sport is a powerful tool: a language that brings communities together but also an action that stakes a claim on a space. De La Calle presented a collective research project as part of the annual IDENSITAT public art festival that explored the celebration and conflict surrounding informal sports in Manresa, Catalunya. Working with resident's associations in the old town, we developed workshops with youth groups to shape fields of play and create games that culminated in a final celebration: a 'Street Olympics'. The aim was to identify informal sport as a way to reclaim, humanise and activate public space.

Guerrilla Gardeners

Guerrilla Gardeners

London

Forget culture, embrace horticulture! Guerrilla Gardeners was conceived as a way of relieving the city of uniform grey. With few gardens in the city, I realised that urban dwellers had little personal outdoor space, or control over their outdoor environmentInviting people to see pavements, lamp-posts and elements of street scenery as a potential garden, Guerrilla Gardeners empowers citizens with a way of brightening mundane surroundings. From a live growing garden wall to a gardening starter pack comprising flower stickers, stencils and seeds, this project embraces hardy gardening for tough urban environments. It's an oldie (2001) but a goodie and remains among my favourite pieces of work.
